I’ve always liked baking but in recent months I’ve been reminded how simple and quick drop cookies are to make. I hate making the same thing twice (a side effect of having a frequently updated recipe blog for 13 years) so when I have seen something I can put into a cookie, I pick it up.
I’ve never cooked with butterscotch chips as they are not something I normally see in even “regular” grocery stores. Maybe a love of butterscotch is a regional thing. At Aldi, butterscotch chips are only available seasonally, near the winter holidays.
The chips (morsels) are smaller than chocolate chips (the ones pictured above are Aldi Baker’s Choice bittersweet chips) and really do taste like butterscotch. The packaging says they are artificially flavored but I would expect most butterscotch chips are since actual butterscotch is sort of a soft toffee which wouldn’t lend itself well to chip form. They do not leave any sort of fake aftertaste and hold their shape just as well as a chocolate chip does. They had a great, buttery, rich flavor that I enjoyed most when paired with dark chocolate because they are rather sweet. Any butterscotch lover should enjoy these chips! They are available now for $1.79/12 oz bag during the holiday season.
I’m starting to wonder if Guittard is the manufacturer behind Aldi’s range of chips. They are one of the few brands available in the US that make bittersweet chips and they also make butterscotch chips. No real proof. If anyone reading has the inside scoop, let me know!
